Location

The retreat is taking place in the small, car-less mountain village of Eggberge, Switzerland, which is reachable only by gondola from the town of Flüelen. There are no shops or ATMs in Eggberge.

Getting There

Because public transportation in Switzerland is efficient and frequent, Swiss Mountain Retreats does not provide transportation to or from the retreat location.

It is recommended that you arrive in Zürich and take the public transportation from there.

The hotel is reached by train, bus, and gondola. From Zürich's central station (Hauptbahnhof), it takes approximately 1.5 hours.

You can also refer to the detailed arrival information on the hotel website

Public Transportation

Step 1: Train to Flüelen

There is a direct train from Zürich Central Station (Zürich HB) to Flüelen that leaves every 2 hours on most days. The train from Zürich HB to Flüelen takes about 1 hour.

Use the SBB timetable to plan your trip from Zürich HB to Eggberge, which takes just over 1.5 hours.

For Reference:
Zürich HB = Zürich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof)
Zürich Flughafen = Zürich Airport (train station in the airport)
(Note the difference “Zürich Flughafen, Bahnhof,” which indicates the bus or tram stop outside the airport)

Step 2: Bus + gondola to Eggberge

From Flüelen Bahnhof, take the bus to Flüelen, Eggberge Talstation, where you catch the gondola up to the village of Eggberge.

Note: the gondola ticket can only be purchased at the Talstation window, not in advance.

Step 3: Walk to the hotel

Berglodge37 is a 5-minute walk from the top of the gondola.

Please note that the path to the hotel is not paved.

Luggage support

If you want luggage help from the gondola station to the hotel, tell me your arrival time, and I’ll coordinate with Berglodge37 (subject to availability).

Swiss Travel Pass (discounted travel for international visitors)

There are several money-saving options for travel passes for international visitors to Switzerland. Travel by train, bus, and boat, as well as on local services in towns and cities. You can also take advantage of many other benefits.

You can find full information about Swiss Travel Passes here: https://www.sbb.ch/en/offers/swiss-travel-pass

Arriving by car

Eggberge is a carless village, so driving to or leaving your car in Eggberge is not allowed.

Please proceed to Parkplatz Luftseilbahn Eggberge to access the gondola up to Eggberge.

It is allowed to park here for the entire weekend, at a cost of CHF 8 / 24hrs.

Accessibility for Persons with Limited Mobility

Many parts of this journey are accessible to people with limited mobility or wheelchair users. However, before committing to travelling to this location, please contact me (david@purecoach.me) or the hotel so we can better understand your specific needs.

Optional: Boat trip from Flüelen to Luzern (departure day)

If you’d like a gentle re-entry after the retreat, there’s an optional boat trip from Flüelen to Luzern on the final day. It’s a beautiful way to decompress after the retreat, and an easy connection back into the train network.

How it works

  • After breakfast, we travel down to Flüelen and go to the main train station.

  • From there it’s a short walk to the boat port, right next to the station.

  • The boat typically departs around 12:00 and arrives in Luzern just before 15:00 (about 3 hours).

Important

  • The cost of the boat ticket is not included in the retreat price.

  • This is not an official part of the retreat, just an optional shared way to travel after we close.

If you’re interested, let me know, and I’ll share the details so you can plan your onward travel accordingly.

What to bring

Provided for you

  • Journal and pen

  • Reusable water bottle (to keep)

  • Small backpack for hikes (for use during your stay)

Hotel Essentials

Daily clothing: The hotel environment is very cozy, warm, and relaxed. Feel free to dress as you are most comfortable for a retreat.

Outdoor Footwear: The hotel encourages but does not require guests to remove shoes to keep the space clean. Particularly when we come in from wet or muddy trails, we leave our shoes in a designated shoe room.

Indoor Footwear: Complimentary slippers are provided at each entrance for indoor use. However, you're welcome to wear your own indoor shoes: sneakers/trainers, slippers, sandals, etc. - whatever is most comfortable for you.

Meditation Necessities

Water, mats, chairs, and meditation cushions are provided in the meditation room; no blankets are provided.

Clothing: As it is often difficult to accommodate everyone’s temperature preferences, please opt for comfortable, warm attire and bring an extra layer. Shoes are removed in the meditation room, so warm socks are recommended.

Walking & Hiking Gear

Shoes: Daily walks will be on gravel and dirt roads or well-maintained trails. Heavy-duty hiking boots aren't usually necessary for these short excursions. However, high-quality hiking boots are a must if you plan on more ambitious hikes. Water-resistant footwear will be necessary for any walks during wet or rainy weather.

If you plan longer hikes and you are unfamiliar with alpine hiking trails, please bring sturdy hiking boots. These trails can be quite rocky and uneven, making walking challenging with sneakers or light hiking shoes.

Backpack provided: A small backpack is provided in your room for use during any day hikes.

A Handy List for Your Reference

  • Casual Clothing: Comfortable attire for relaxing at the hotel

  • Indoor Shoes: Sneakers, slippers, or sandals for indoor use

  • Comfortable Pants: Yoga pants or loose-fitting trousers

  • Comfortable Top: Short- or long-sleeved shirt

The Hotel

Rooms

There are three types of rooms at the Berglodge37: 14 single rooms, 9 double rooms, and one suite.

As you can see from the pictures, all rooms have beautiful views of the mountains. The beds are deliberately higher than normal to ensure a proper view of the mountains from the bed.

Unless otherwise specified, you are booked in a single room.

Lounge

The lounge of the hotel is large and comfortable and has fantastic views. Coffee, tea, and snacks are available here and in the restaurant all day long. This is a place for us to meet and exchange experiences and ideas.

Food

Please note the restaurant serves only vegetarian food.

All meals will be provided during your stay including

  • Dinner on the first night

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the full days of the retreat

  • Breakfast on the last day

No lunch will be provided on the last day, but this can be arranged individually.

Snacks

The traditional morning and afternoon breaks with coffee and snacks (Znüni and Zvieri, respectively) are observed during the retreat.

Saunas

There are two traditional saunas of different temperatures and an infrared sauna, each of which can be reserved.

Traditional Swiss sauna etiquette is to be unclothed with a towel to sit or lie on, and to optionally cover yourself with a second towel.

Seminar Room

There are two seminar rooms available, and we have reserved the smaller of the two. If no one has reserved the larger room, we may be allowed to use that one instead.

The Surrounding Area

Eggberge is a small village with no shops or ATMs and no cars, except for a few for local residents.

Walking and Hiking
There are many wonderful places to walk and hike in the area.

You can see some of the favorites here.

This website is excellent for finding hiking routes in Switzerland.

Tradition

This region is known for its long history of hay-making in the steep uplands. You might notice long zip-lines around the area as you are hiking. These are used to send baled hay from the higher grasslands to farms down below for winter storage.

Weather

What to Expect

Different times of year can bring anything from warm, spring-like days to cold rain and storms, so it is best to be prepared for all weather conditions.

You can check the forecast for the week here.

Additional information about Eggberge, the region, and the weather can be found here.
