Embracing Summer’s Final Act: A Reflection on Transition

THAT SUMMER FEELING

As I bask in the warmth of the August sun, a gentle reminder arises that summer’s end is nearer than I may wish to admit. Here in Zürich, where the summer finally feels in full swing, there’s a noticeable shift in the air. People are taking their long-awaited vacations, and the city is alive with the spirit of the season. Yet, as I soak in the sun by the lake, I can’t help but feel an undercurrent of change.

The end of summer looms even as we’re enjoying its peak. Like the saying, "In the midst of life, we are in death," this duality, the intertwining of joy and the inevitable transition, prompts me to take a few moments to reflect on where I am right now and where I’m heading.

What do I want to accomplish in the dwindling days of summer?

How do I want to carry forward the energy and restfulness I've cultivated during these warmer months?

SHIFTING RHYTHMS

For many, the rhythm of life will soon shift to a return to school and normal work routines. This approaching change brings a sense of urgency to fully embrace what remains of summer. The lake is warm, the air is hot, and the days are still long. Now is the time to soak in these moments, to fully immerse ourselves in the season’s offerings.

With autumn just around the corner, it’s worth asking:

  • What do you want to remember about this summer?

  • How will you spend these last precious weeks before September arrives?

The Power of Setting Conscious Intentions

It’s tempting to glide through these last few weeks of summer, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s an ideal time of year to “glide.”

However, it can be useful and helpful to set some deliberate, conscious intentions for the remainder of the summer. Moving through this time with awareness can transform a fleeting season into a period of lasting impact.

Consider asking yourself the questions above to gently create some clarity.

Take a moment to pause and choose how you wish to engage with the remaining days. Whether it’s enjoying more time outdoors, connecting with loved ones, or simply savoring the slower pace of life, setting some clear intentions can help to make these next few days of summer truly meaningful.

Embracing this kind of intentional living allows us to close this chapter of summer with a sense of fulfillment, ready to embrace the next season with grace and purpose.
